The Gospel According to Brabenec
Begin at the tree.
A breathtaking spectacle of history’s nonsensicality.
Human toil, hardship and inventions.
Or is it a play with God hanging by a thread?
We are not allowed to say our ship is sinking.
Every pine knows it is so.
And humility and forgiveness (perhaps once even love) are rainbows on a bubble.
An excerpt of the lyrics of the song, Begin at the Tree, which appeared in the film The Gospel According to Brabenec, which was launched in Czech cinemas and nominated for the Czech Lion. In it, documentary filmmaker, Míra Janek, captures impromptu discussions between Vratislav Brabenec, a member of Plastic People of the Universe, and journalist Renata Kalenská. Thus, a non-binding strip of open philosophizing, ironic jokes and remarks about the life of birds and nature in its essence was created. The recordings of the discussions between both figures are mostly shot using a handheld camera and are interspersed with poetic interludes. The film was presented at the 18th annual Jihlava IDFF.
